Proving that poetry is more than rhyming couplets, this installment in the Poetry Power series (6 titles) focuses on five-line poems called cinquains—specifically, the American cinquain created by Adelaide Crapsey, which describe a single subject or idea. Straightforward text first gives directions on how to create a cinquain, explaining the part of speech, description, or phrase that
makes up each line. Successive chapters guide students through writing five different cinquain poems with themed prompts (nature, animal, sports, friendship, and gross). Accompanied by relevant stock photos and digital graphics, each chapter offers suggestions and tips, such as using personification to describe a form of nature or drawing inspiration from a pet’s physical traits. A full-page illustrated cinquain makes a handy reference, and a final note gives children ideas for sharing their poems.
